Description
Karuizawa Black is a blended whisky produced at Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture, operated by Mercian at the foot of Mt. Asama until the distillery closed in 2000. Bottled in 1986 for the Japanese market at 40%, it represents the distillery's commercial output during its active years, drawing on both malt and grain spirit in the house blend format.
Matured in Ex-Bourbon casks, the whisky shows the lighter, accessible character typical of a domestic-market blend from this era. Vanilla, light caramel and a gentle sweetness from the American oak are the expected signatures, rounded at 40% into an easy-drinking style that predates the single-cask era that would later make Karuizawa famous.
