Description
Karuizawa 50 Years Old Cask No. 538 is a single-cask single malt from Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture, distilled in 1969 and bottled in 2019 by Aqua Vitae for the Taiwan market at 59.2% cask strength. Fifty years in a single Oloroso sherry cask at a high-altitude Nagano site places this among the most extreme expressions of patience the closed distillery's inventory can produce, and the liquid bears the weight of that time.
The Oloroso sherry cask has had half a century to work on Karuizawa's richly made Golden Promise malt, delivering a density of dried fruit, old leather, dark chocolate, incense and savoury complexity that defines the outer edge of the distillery's character. At 59.2% cask strength, the whisky retains the full concentration of that maturation. The combination of a celebrated closed site, a rare 50-year age statement and a documented single cask makes this one of the most significant bottlings in the range.
