Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture operated from 1956 until its closure in 2000, with its stock now representing a fixed archive from a demolished site. This single cask, number 2372, was distilled in 1965 and bottled in 2016 at cask strength for La Maison du Whisky, releasing it for the French market at 62.3% abv after a full 50 years in wood.
The cask detail records this as an Ex-Sherry cask, placing it in the sherry-dominant tradition for which Karuizawa became celebrated. Half a century of Oloroso influence in a slow-breathing mountain climate draws out all that dark fruit concentration, dried fig, aged leather and the dense, candied plum character typical of the distillery's sherry-matured stock. The cask strength bottling delivers the uncut intensity of that 50-year journey, a document as much as a whisky, from a distillery whose like will not be seen again.
