    Single Malt

    $101558

A 1965 vintage single cask from Karuizawa, matured for 50 years in an Oloroso sherry cask and bottled at cask strength in 2016 for the German market, this Nagano distillery expression is dense with dark fruit and the signature leather depth of a great sherry butt given half a century.

Karuizawa distillery sat at the foot of the active Mt. Asama volcano in Nagano Prefecture, operating from 1956 until its closure in 2000. This single cask was distilled in 1965 and held in an Oloroso sherry cask for 50 years, bottled in 2016 at cask strength as a distillery bottling for the German market, at 62.3% abv.

Karuizawa's reliance on Oloroso sherry casks was defining, and this 50-year-old expression shows exactly why: deep, almost brooding complexity built from decades of dark dried fruit absorption, leather, rich chocolate and the slowly oxidising richness of aged sherry wood. The cool, high-altitude climate of Nagano slows the maturation process slightly compared to lowland sites, helping to preserve distillery character while the cask builds its dense, layered contribution. The cask strength release captures this concentration intact, a bottle that is as close to impossible to replace as anything in Japanese whisky.
