Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture was distilling single malt from 1956 until its closure in 2000. This single cask expression was distilled in 1963, making it among the oldest surviving Karuizawa bottlings, and was held in Ex-Bourbon wood for 50 years before being drawn at cask strength and bottled in 2014 for the German market at 59.4% abv.
Fifty years in American oak is rare anywhere in the world, and the spirit here has had time to evolve well beyond youthful vanilla into deeper, more complex territory: tallow, vanilla extract and, per the flavour data, a characteristically sweaty old-wood note that marks the extreme end of long bourbon maturation. The cask strength bottling preserves the concentration of a half-century of slow evaporation in the cool mountain air of Nagano, making this a historically significant document from a distillery that will never make spirit again.
