Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture operated from 1956 until its closure in 2000. This 1971 vintage single cask was held in a Bourbon cask for 41 years before bottling at cask strength as a distillery release for the German market in 2013, at 63.7% abv. The Bourbon cask path through Karuizawa's archive is less common than the sherry tradition but produces a distinct and revealing counterpoint.
The flavour data records dried fruit as the primary note, which at 41 years in American oak reflects both the distillery's naturally fruit-forward spirit and the deep oxidative character that develops in old bourbon wood over decades. Alongside dried fruit, expect layers of old vanilla, tallow and the subtle cereal-wax quality that is characteristic of Karuizawa's small-still distillate. The cask strength bottling, at just over 63%, delivers this at full intensity and shows how the Nagano spirit aged when the sherry tradition was not applied.
