Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture was a small single malt operation, open from 1956 until its closure in 2000. This 1972 vintage single cask was held in an Oloroso sherry butt for 36 years before bottling at cask strength as a distillery release for the French market in 2008, at 65% abv.
The flavour profile here is notably multi-dimensional: tobacco and leathery depth from long wood contact, citric brightness that may reflect both the distillery's spirit and residual sherry acids, cooked and dried fruit from the Oloroso cask, new wood resin and an oily texture that is a hallmark of Karuizawa's pot still distillate. The cask strength of 65% is among the highest in the range, suggesting a cask with relatively low evaporative loss that has preserved a high-intensity, fresh quality alongside the deep wood-driven complexity. A complex and technically revealing expression from the 1972 distillation year.
