Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000, and the releases drawn from its surviving stock continue to appear on global markets decades after the last spirit was distilled there. This single cask, a 1981 vintage, was matured for 35 years in an Oloroso sherry cask before bottling in 2016 for the Netherlands.
Five years longer than the typical Karuizawa 30-year sherry release, the extra maturation in Oloroso wood deepens the dried fruit and chocolate character while adding layers of old spice and antique leather that emerge over the final years in cask. At 56.6% cask strength, this sits at the lower end of the Karuizawa range, a relative accessibility that allows the individual flavour elements to express themselves clearly within the distillery's characteristic richness.
