A 1981 vintage from the closed Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture, aged 35 years in a bourbon cask and released at 61.5% cask strength to the Irish market, the American oak delivering vanilla and dried fruit over a long maturation at the foot of Mt. Asama.

Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture was demolished in 2016, sixteen years after it ceased production in 2000, leaving its surviving casks as the only record of what the distillery produced. This single cask, distilled in 1981 and aged for 35 years in a bourbon cask, was released in 2017 for the Irish market, a comparatively late bottling from the distillery's Ex-Bourbon inventory.

Thirty-five years in American oak builds a profile of vanilla, dried orchard fruit, baking spice and honeyed depth, with the length of maturation adding a complexity beyond what younger bourbon-aged releases from the same site typically show. At 61.5% cask strength, bottled by the distillery's custodians for Ireland, it demonstrates the range that Karuizawa's Ex-Bourbon casks offered alongside the better-known and more numerous Oloroso sherry releases from the closed Nagano distillery.
