Karuizawa, the small pot still distillery in Nagano Prefecture, closed in 2000 after four decades of production, and the remaining casks have been bottled over subsequent years to meet global demand. This single sherry butt was distilled in 1977 and matured for 35 years before release in 2012 for the Taiwan market.

At 65.9% cask strength, this is among the higher-strength releases from the distillery's surviving stock. The cooked fruit note in the profile is characteristic of Karuizawa's very long sherry maturation, where extended time in wood pushes the fruit into darker, more concentrated territory alongside bitter chocolate, dried prune and old leather. The distillery's custodians bottled this from the single sherry butt, maintaining the single cask character that defines the most collectable Karuizawa releases.
