Description
Karuizawa single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000, and the Ex-Bourbon barrel aged casks from its inventory are among the less numerous but equally sought-after survivors from the site. Cask #6476, distilled in 1980, was matured for 34 years in an Ex-Bourbon barrel before La Maison du Whisky bottled it in 2014 for the French market.
Thirty-four years in a bourbon barrel builds a profile of vanilla, dried fruit, light spice and honeyed oak that contrasts with Karuizawa's dominant Oloroso sherry character. At 63% cask strength the whisky has the density that extended maturation in a single barrel produces, and the La Maison du Whisky selection confirms the cask as one of the stronger and more concentrated Ex-Bourbon examples from this Nagano ghost distillery.
