Description
Karuizawa single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000, and independent bottlers across Europe played a significant role in bringing its remaining casks to specialist markets in the following years. Cask #4943, a 1981 vintage matured for 33 years in an Oloroso sherry cask, was selected by The Whisky Exchange and bottled in 2014 for the UK market.
Thirty-three years in Oloroso wood produces the concentrated dark dried fruit, chocolate, leather and old spice that define the classic Karuizawa profile. At 63.4% cask strength, the whisky carries the power typical of older single casks drawn undiluted from the butt. The Whisky Exchange selection adds a layer of provenance, marking this as a curated independent bottling from a closed Japanese distillery whose releases have become central to the Japanese whisky collector market.
