Karuizawa was a small single malt distillery at the foot of the active Mt. Asama volcano in Nagano Prefecture, operated by Mercian. It distilled from 1956 until closure in 2000 and was demolished in 2016, leaving a finite body of casks that has become one of the most sought-after stocks in the world. This single cask, distilled in 1981 and bottled in 2014 by La Maison du Whisky for the French market, spent 33 years maturing before it was drawn.

The maturation took place in an Ex-Sherry cask, the type most associated with Karuizawa's house character. Karuizawa was known for its heavy use of imported Golden Promise barley and an unusually strong reliance on Oloroso sherry wood, producing dark, richly layered fruit and leather. At 54.5% cask strength from a single cask, the result carries the concentrated dried fruit, bittersweet chocolate and warm leather typical of long sherry maturation at this site.
