Description
Karuizawa, the small single malt distillery below Mt. Asama in Nagano Prefecture, distilled from 1956 before closing in 2000. Owned by Mercian, it was demolished in 2016, and its remaining casks have been released over the following years by the owners and specialist bottlers. Cask number 6056, a 1981 vintage, was held for 32 years and selected by The Whisky Exchange for the UK market, bottled in 2013.
First-fill Oloroso sherry casks deliver the most concentrated sherry imprint, saturating the spirit with dried dark fruit, espresso, leather and bitter spice with minimal dilution from the wood. Karuizawa's long reliance on this cask type, combined with its use of Golden Promise barley and small pot stills, produced a style of concentrated intensity that has made these single casks among the most sought-after in the Japanese canon. At 60.3% cask strength, this bottling sits at the fuller end of the range.
