Description
Karuizawa, a single malt distillery at the foot of Mt. Asama volcano in Nagano Prefecture, closed in 2000 after decades of producing richly sherried single malt. This 1980 vintage was drawn from an Oloroso sherry butt after 32 years and released to the global market in 2013 as a single cask bottling at cask strength.
Thirty-two years in an Oloroso butt produces the layered, concentrated profile that Karuizawa's cask programme was designed to create: dark dried fruit, bitter chocolate, warm spice and aged leather, all integrated through long contact with first-rate sherry wood. At 59.2%, the whisky balances the power of cask strength with enough softness that the individual flavour elements remain distinct, following the house pattern that made these Nagano single casks so widely sought after in the years after closure.
