From a sherry butt filled at the now-closed Karuizawa distillery in 1976 and drawn at 63% cask strength after 32 years, the profile here runs toward coal-smoke, savory vegetable and old leather, an unusual darker facet of Nagano malt.

Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture ceased production in 2000, leaving behind a finite inventory of single casks that have been released incrementally by custodians in the years since. This bottling was distilled in 1976 and matured for 32 years in an Oloroso sherry butt before release in 2009 to the global market.
The recorded flavour notes of coal-gas and cooked vegetable sit at the more savoury and smoky end of the Karuizawa spectrum, underpinned by the dense tannin and dried fruit that the distillery's sherry butt maturation typically delivers. Bottled at 63% cask strength as a single cask by the distillery's own custodians, it illustrates the variety that individual butt selection could produce even within a house style defined by heavy sherry wood.
