Karuizawa, a single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture operated by Mercian, distilled from 1956 before closing in 2000 and being demolished in 2016. This single cask from the 1981 vintage was matured for 31 years and bottled in 2012 for the Taiwanese market, one of several 1981 single casks that went to Asian markets during that period as interest in the closed distillery grew.

The cask was a sherry butt seasoned with Oloroso, Karuizawa's signature maturation choice. Three decades in Spanish oak on a spirit made from imported Golden Promise barley typically produced the deeply layered, fruit-forward and leathery character the distillery became famous for after closure. No specific flavour notes are recorded for this cask, but the house pattern, running to stewed dark fruit, leather, bitter chocolate and spice, provides the context for this single cask. Bottled at 60.4% from a single butt.
