Description
Karuizawa distillery was active in Nagano Prefecture from 1956 until 2000 and was demolished in 2016. Using small pot stills, imported Golden Promise barley and an extensive sherry maturation programme under the Mercian group, it produced darkly fruited, richly textured single malt that became widely prized after closure. This is cask number 7857, a single cask 30 Years Old bottled in 2014 for the German market.
Thirty years in an Oloroso sherry butt has produced a spirit of considerable depth and concentration. Dark fruit, molasses, bitter chocolate, roasted spice and old leather fill the palate on the distillery's characteristic rich, full-bodied frame. At 58% cask strength the spirit remains tightly focused without the aggression of a younger, higher-ABV release. Cask 7857 is one of the last generation of 30-year bottlings to leave the now-demolished distillery.
