Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture distilled whisky from 1956 until 2000 under the Mercian group, using Golden Promise barley, small pot stills and a maturation programme anchored by Oloroso sherry casks. The site was demolished in 2016. This is cask number 4201, bottled in 2015 at 30 years old for global release, one of the later 30-year bottlings from the distillery archive.
Three decades in an Oloroso sherry butt has produced a spirit shaped by deep, integrated sherry influence. Layered dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, clove and old leather build on the rich, full base typical of Karuizawa's pot still production. At 57.4% cask strength the bottling sits between the most powerful and the most approachable of the 30-year releases. Cask 4201 is a 2015 selection from a closed distillery, adding to the finite archive of surviving Karuizawa casks.
