Description
Karuizawa distillery, nestled in Nagano Prefecture at the base of the active Mt. Asama volcano, operated from 1956 until 2000 and was demolished in 2016. Working with small pot stills and imported Golden Promise barley under Mercian, it developed a house character built on heavily sherried, dark and richly textured single malt. This is cask number 3139, a single cask bottled at 30 years old in 2014 for global distribution.
Thirty years in an Oloroso sherry butt has given cask 3139 considerable depth. The sherry wood contributes dark cherry, dried walnut, bitter chocolate and warming spice, while the distillery's characteristic leather and fruit base provides the structure. At 55.4% cask strength this is one of the more moderate ABVs among the 30-year releases, allowing the complexity of three decades in wood to come through with some accessibility.
