Description
Karuizawa, a single malt distillery at the foot of Mt. Asama in Nagano Prefecture, was operated by Mercian from 1956 until it closed in 2000. The site was demolished in 2016. Cask number 7924, a 1981 vintage, was selected by La Maison du Whisky and bottled in 2011 after 30 years of maturation, made available through a dedicated event channel rather than standard retail.
The maturation vessel was a sherry butt filled with Oloroso, the cornerstone of Karuizawa's style. Long ageing in heavily seasoned Spanish oak on spirit made from Golden Promise barley produced the dark, richly layered character for which the distillery became known: dried and stewed dark fruit, leather, bitter chocolate and warm spice. Without a specific flavour note on record for this cask, the house pattern prevails. Bottled at 56.6% cask strength.
