    700ml / 60.8%
    Single Malt

    $31249

Aged 30 years in an Ex-Bourbon cask, this 1981 vintage from the closed Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture was bottled at 60.8% cask strength for an event release in 2011, showing a less typical but no less compelling face of a demolished site.

Karuizawa operated as a single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture under Mercian from 1956 to 2000, when it closed, and was demolished in 2016. Bottlings from the warehouse have appeared across various channels since, including occasional event releases. This single cask from the 1981 vintage was held for 30 years before being bottled in 2011 as an event release at cask strength.

The maturation vessel was an Ex-Bourbon cask, a less common choice at a distillery that built its reputation predominantly on Oloroso sherry wood. Bourbon wood on Karuizawa spirit typically yields a different register: vanilla, dried orchard fruit, and a lighter sweetness in contrast to the heavy sherried character of the more common butt releases. No specific flavour notes are recorded for this cask, but its 30-year Ex-Bourbon development on Golden Promise spirit is likely to show fruit, vanilla and gentle oak spice. Bottled at 60.8%.
