Description
Karuizawa was a single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture, operating under Mercian from 1956 until closure in 2000. This single cask, number 7026, was distilled in 1977 and bottled in 2008 at 30 Years Old by the French independent La Maison du Whisky for the French market, one of several collaborations that brought Karuizawa releases to European collectors.
Matured in an Oloroso sherry butt over three decades, the cask follows the distillery's characteristic path toward dense dried fruit, bitter chocolate and old spice. At 62.8% cask strength the whisky has the force typical of Karuizawa's sherry-driven output, and the La Maison du Whisky bottling adds a provenance that connects Japan's most celebrated ghost distillery to the independent bottler tradition of continental Europe.
