Description
Karuizawa was a single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture, producing whisky from 1956 until its closure in 2000 and later demolished in 2016. Run by Mercian, the distillery was defined by small pot stills, imported Golden Promise barley and a heavy dependence on Oloroso Sherry Butts, which gave its output a dark, richly dried-fruit character unlike most Japanese malt of the era. This release was distilled in 1983, matured for 29 years in a Sherry Butt and bottled by the distillery in 2012 for the Taiwan market at cask strength.
The Oloroso sherry butt maturation over 29 years in Nagano produced the distillery's characteristic profile of dried figs, dark cherry, leather and warm spice, deepened by the high Golden Promise malt content. Bottled directly by Karuizawa itself, rather than an independent, this is an official single cask expression from the estate's own stocks, now permanently finite.
