Karuizawa was situated at the foot of Mt. Asama in Nagano Prefecture and operated from 1956 until its closure in 2000, with the site demolished in 2016. The distillery produced single malts of unusual richness through small pot stills and imported Golden Promise barley, with bourbon-cask releases offering a lighter counterpoint to its famous sherry-aged bottlings. Cask #8529 was filled in 1982, matured in a Bourbon cask for 29 years and bottled in 2012 by The Whisky Exchange as an event bottling at cask strength.

At 58.8% the spirit carries the full concentration of nearly three decades in Nagano, offering vanilla cream, dried tropical fruit and a clean grain sweetness on the finish that is characteristic of the distillery's Ex-Bourbon profile. Single cask bottlings of this vintage and style are now among the last available expressions from one of the most coveted ghost distilleries in the world.
