Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000 after distilling since 1956, with its remaining casks among the most sought-after stocks in Japanese whisky. This bottling captures a 1974 vintage matured for 29 years and released in 2004 only to the Japanese domestic market.
Matured in an Ex-Bourbon cask rather than the Oloroso sherry that defined most Karuizawa output, the result is a departure from the distillery's signature dark character, leaning toward vanilla, orchard fruit and spice. Bottled at 58.7% cask strength from a single cask by the distillery itself, it represents an early release in what would become one of the most collected series of single malts from a closed Japanese site.
