Karuizawa was a tiny single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture, operated by Mercian at the base of the active Mt. Asama volcano. It distilled from 1956 and closed in 2000, leaving a finite stock of casks that became among the most sought-after whiskies in the world. This bottling is a single cask drawn from the 1985 vintage, aged 25 years and released in 2010 for the Taiwan market at cask strength.

The cask was an Oloroso sherry butt, the wood type Karuizawa used more than almost any other distillery. Twenty-five years in that environment delivers the deep, dark character the distillery was known for: dried fig and raisin, Christmas cake richness, and leather with a lifted dried-fruit finish. The high Golden Promise barley content and the long sherry maturation together give a density of flavour rare in Japanese whisky at any vintage.
