Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture was active from 1956 and closed in 2000. Under Mercian, it produced small batches of single malt using pot stills and Golden Promise barley, maturing the spirit predominantly in Oloroso sherry casks. This 23 Years Old single cask from the 1989 vintage was bottled in 2013 at a high cask strength of 63.9% for the German market.
Over two decades in the sherry butt, the spirit draws intense black fruit, bitter dark chocolate and dry leather that sit alongside the richer dried-fig sweetness typical of Karuizawa at full sherry maturation. At 63.9%, this is among the higher natural strengths in the range and gives the whisky a concentrated, almost chewy character on the palate. Single cask and undiluted, it represents the Karuizawa profile at its most uncompromising.
