Description
Karuizawa, the closed Nagano Prefecture distillery that operated under Mercian from 1956 until 2000, is best known for its heavily sherried releases, but a smaller number of casks were filled into Ex-Bourbon wood. This is one of them: a single hogshead from the 1986 vintage, matured for 22 years and bottled in 2008 at cask strength for the European market.
Ex-Bourbon maturation allows the distillery character to come through more directly than the dominant sherry profile does. The Golden Promise malt base and small-pot-still distillation give a firm, waxy texture, and the hogshead adds vanilla, gentle toasted-oak spice and stone fruit rather than the dried-fruit richness associated with the sherry releases. At 60.7% it is full-bodied and direct, a rarer expression of Karuizawa that shows a different face of the same closed distillery.
