Description
Karuizawa distillery operated in Nagano Prefecture at the foot of Mt. Asama volcano from 1956 until closure in 2000. Small pot stills, Golden Promise barley and an emphatic reliance on Oloroso sherry casks defined its character under Mercian's ownership. The distillery was demolished in 2016, and releases since closure have appeared through Number One Drinks and other channels in small allocations for specific markets.
This single cask was distilled in 1996 and matured for 21 years in an Oloroso sherry cask before bottling in 2017 for the German market at 62.5%. Two decades in sherry wood draws out prune, dark cherry and bitter chocolate with the savoury leather undertow that marked Karuizawa across the full span of its bottlings. The high cask strength preserves the intensity intact.
