Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture was demolished in 2016, the same year this single cask from the 1994 vintage was released. The pairing of a final year for the physical site and a bottle from the distillery's later production era gives this 21 Years Old global release a particular resonance. The cask was an Oloroso sherry cask, matured at cask strength for 21 years.
Two decades in Oloroso sherry on a Golden Promise malt base builds the dense, layered character Karuizawa is known for: dark fruit, espresso bitterness, warm leather and the grip of well-aged sherry wood. At 63.6% cask strength the expression is powerful and direct, with no dilution softening the wood contribution or the spirit's own waxy firmness. A single cask from the final years of Karuizawa's active distillation, carrying everything the distillery put into it.
