Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000 and its remaining casks were released over the following years, most of them sherry matured, but a smaller group rested in Ex-Bourbon wood. This single cask from the 1990 vintage is one of the latter, aged 21 years and bottled in 2011 at cask strength of 56.1% for an event release.
Ex-Bourbon maturation shows the Karuizawa distillery character from a different angle. Without the density of Oloroso sherry, the Golden Promise malt and small-pot-still spirit speak more directly: stone fruit, vanilla cream and a waxiness typical of the house style, with gentle toasted-oak spice rather than dried-fruit richness. At 56.1% it sits at the lower end of cask strength for Karuizawa, which gives this single cask a slightly more accessible, rounder texture than the heavily sherried expressions from the same era.
