Description
When Karuizawa closed its Nagano Prefecture distillery in 2000, it was little known outside Japan. Subsequent single cask releases issued by Number One Drinks and the distillery owners revealed a malt of extraordinary depth, built on Golden Promise barley and decades in Oloroso sherry wood. This single cask from the 1989 vintage was aged 21 years, bottled in 2010 at a cask strength of 59.6%, and released for the Japanese market.
Two decades in an Oloroso sherry butt generates the richly layered character that became Karuizawa's signature: raisin and dried plum sweetness, mocha bitterness and a long, polished leather finish. The domestic Japanese release is a rarer market destination for vintage Karuizawa than the European and Taiwanese allocations, and the expression here shows the fully integrated sherry and malt balance typical of the distillery at its best.
