Description
Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, ran from 1956 to 2000 before closing under Mercian and being demolished in 2016. This Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottling, release 132.3, was distilled in 1993 and bottled in 2013 at 20 Years Old and a cask strength of 61.1%, released globally by the SMWS.
The vessel is a refill sherry butt, already stripped of its first-fill richness, which means the Oloroso character is present but restrained: dried orange peel, light toffee and aging leather rather than the dense, dark fruit that a fresh sherry cask would give. Twenty years in Nagano's mountain air and the distillery's Golden Promise grain foundation build a malt that is layered without being heavy. The 61.1% bottling strength delivers the full picture without filtration or dilution, a textbook example of a refill sherry cask in this closed distillery's repertoire.
