Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture ran small pot stills with Golden Promise barley from 1956 until its closure in 2000, producing a malt that paired especially well with long wood ageing. This single cask from the 1988 vintage spent 19 years in an Ex-Bourbon cask before being bottled in 2007 at cask strength for global release.
The flavour profile is noted as dried fruit, leathery and sherried, a combination that suggests the cask either had significant sherry influence despite the Ex-Bourbon classification, or the spirit itself contributes much of that dried-fruit and leather character typical of Karuizawa malt. At 59.8% cask strength the texture is full and direct, retaining the density and grip that made vintage Karuizawa releases sought after. Single cask, undiluted and from one of the last decades of the distillery's active life.
