Karuizawa distillery operated in Nagano Prefecture at the foot of Mt. Asama volcano from 1956 until its closure in 2000, using small pot stills and Golden Promise barley under the Mercian group. The site was demolished in 2016, making its remaining stocks among the most sought-after in the Japanese whisky world. This is a single cask expression from a 2000 vintage cask, bottled in 2018 for the European market after 18 years of maturation.

The cask is an Oloroso sherry cask, consistent with the heavy sherry maturation programme that defined Karuizawa's style. At 18 years and a cask strength of 60.5%, the sherry influence is deep: dark cherry, dried walnut, bitter chocolate and old leather build over a rich, concentrated base. The high ABV amplifies every element, giving this single cask a density and grip that reflects both the wood and the distillery's characteristic fullness.
