Description
Karuizawa was a small single malt distillery in Nagano Prefecture that operated from 1956 until 2000. Under the Mercian group, it worked with imported Golden Promise barley, small pot stills and a heavy maturation programme dominated by Oloroso sherry casks. The distillery was demolished in 2016, leaving surviving casks as irreplaceable stocks. This single cask from the 2000 vintage was bottled in 2018 for global release after 18 years.
Matured in an Oloroso sherry cask, the expression shows the depth of spirit and wood working together over nearly two decades. At 61.6% cask strength the profile is direct: dried dark fruit, clove, bitter chocolate and aged leather sit on a weighty, full-bodied base. The Karuizawa house character, built on rich sherry-driven fruit and leather, comes through clearly in this single cask release from the distillery's last production year.
