Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture distilled from 1956 until it closed in 2000, using small pot stills and a notably high proportion of Golden Promise barley. The site was demolished in 2016, and its surviving casks, largely in Oloroso sherry wood, have been steadily released to global collectors. This 18 Years Old single cask from the 1999 vintage was bottled in 2017 for worldwide distribution.

Eighteen years in an Oloroso sherry cask at Nagano's altitude gave the spirit full development of dried dark fruit, prune, chocolate and the leather characteristic of extended sherry maturation at this distillery. Bottled at 60.4% without reduction, the release carries the concentration and depth that Karuizawa built its posthumous reputation upon. A global release drawing from near the end of the distillery's production run.
