    700ml / 61.9%
    Single Malt

A Japanese red wine cask gives this 1995 Karuizawa 18 Years Old a vivid berry and tannic depth quite unlike the distillery’s sherry releases, bottled at 61.9% cask strength for an event from the closed Nagano distillery.

Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture is best known for Oloroso sherry maturation, but a handful of single casks took Japanese red wine wood, a cask type specific to the distillery's location in a wine-producing region of Nagano. This single cask from the 1995 vintage was matured entirely in a Japanese red wine cask and bottled in 2013 at 61.9% cask strength for an event release.

Eighteen years in a Japanese red wine cask builds a profile distinct from anything else in the Karuizawa range: vivid fresh berry, darker cherry and a dry tannic edge replace the dried-fruit and leather of the Oloroso releases, while the underlying Golden Promise malt character and the firm, waxy texture of the distillery remain consistent. At 61.9% and from a single cask, the wine influence is direct and unmediated. A Karuizawa for those who want to see the distillery through a completely different wood lens.
