Description
Karuizawa operated in Nagano Prefecture from 1956 until 2000 and was demolished in 2016. Under the Mercian group, the distillery used small pot stills, imported Golden Promise barley and a maturation programme heavily weighted toward Oloroso sherry casks, producing dark, richly fruited single malt that found its audience internationally after closure. This single cask from the 2000 vintage was bottled in 2017 for the Japanese domestic market at 17 years old.
With 17 years in an Oloroso sherry cask, the spirit carries the full depth of the distillery's signature style. Dark fruit, warm leather, candied peel and old spice layer over a dense, weighty body. At 60.4% cask strength, the palate is rich and concentrated. A domestic market release from the 2000 vintage, now representing one of the last records of Karuizawa's production before its silent years began.
