Description
Karuizawa distillery operated in Nagano Prefecture from 1956 until 2000, when production stopped permanently. The site, run by Mercian and known for its use of imported Golden Promise barley and small pot stills, was demolished in 2016. This single cask expression from a 2000 vintage was selected for the Austrian market and bottled in 2016 at 16 years old, one of the earlier post-closure releases from this vintage year.
Matured in an Oloroso sherry cask, the spirit has absorbed sixteen years of sherry wood influence. At 63.8% cask strength the result is intense: dark cherry, dried fig, roasted spice and old leather layer over a full, weighty body. The high ABV demands water or patience, but the structure beneath is the Karuizawa signature, fruit and leather driven by heavy sherry maturation in a distillery that is now irreplaceable.
