Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture produced single malt whisky from 1956, relying on small pot stills and Golden Promise barley under Mercian's ownership. After closing in 2000 and demolition in 2016, its remaining casks have been bottled in small parcels for specialist markets and events. This 16 Years Old expression was distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2013 as a single cask, cask strength release for an event market.
Like the majority of Karuizawa's releases, the cask was an Oloroso sherry butt, delivering the dense dried fruit, dark chocolate and leather the distillery became renowned for during its short life. At 59.5% the spirit carries full cask weight, with the fruit concentrated and the spice sharp, a direct expression of what sixteen years in heavy sherry wood at high altitude produced from this Nagano site.
