Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000, and its vintage casks were sought by independent bottlers as well as the distillery's own owners. This single cask from the 1994 vintage was bottled by La Maison du Whisky for the French market in 2010, after 15 years in an Oloroso sherry butt, at a cask strength of 62.7%. It carries the cask designation Cask 270 (LMDW), placing it within the documented La Maison du Whisky series of Karuizawa releases.
Fifteen years in Oloroso sherry on the Golden Promise malt characteristic of Karuizawa gives a dense, richly fruited expression: dark cherry, fig paste and warming leather, with the typical dried-fruit depth the distillery is known for. At 62.7% it is firmly at cask strength, giving the LMDW bottling the same direct intensity as the distillery's own releases of similar vintage and age.
