Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000, and its vintage single casks were released over the years that followed by Number One Drinks and related bottlers. This single cask from the 1992 vintage spent 15 years in an Oloroso sherry butt before being bottled in 2007 at 61.5% cask strength for European release.
The noted flavour profile is chocolate, and that signal is typical of Karuizawa sherry maturation: the Golden Promise barley spirit and high-extraction Oloroso butt together produce a rich ganache and dried-cherry note, with underlying dried fruit and leather typical of the house character. At 15 years the spirit has absorbed considerable sherry influence without yet achieving the final wood-dried depth of the older vintage releases, giving this expression a slightly sweeter, more confectionery-forward profile within the Karuizawa range.
