Description
Karuizawa distillery in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000, and the smaller number of casks that passed through bourbon and wine wood rather than the signature Oloroso represent a less common dimension of the distillery's output. This single cask from the 1995 vintage was matured in Ex-Bourbon wood before transfer into a wine cask, then bottled in 2009 at 59.4% cask strength for the Norwegian market after 14 years.
The Ex-Bourbon base gives a vanilla and light cereal foundation, and the wine cask adds red fruit and a softer, rounder character than the sherry-heavy releases. At 14 years and 59.4% the expression retains the firm, waxy texture typical of Karuizawa small-pot-still distillation while offering a noticeably different flavour direction from the dense, dark-fruit Oloroso profile. A single cask for those interested in the less obvious corners of the Karuizawa catalogue.
