Description
Karuizawa was a small single malt distillery perched in Nagano Prefecture, using pot stills and a high share of Golden Promise barley under Mercian's watch. From 1956 until closure in 2000, then demolition in 2016, it produced a body of casks that has since commanded intense attention from collectors worldwide. This 13 Years Old expression was distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2010 as a single cask for the Japanese domestic market.
The maturation vessel was an Oloroso sherry cask, the wood format most associated with Karuizawa's house profile. Thirteen years of sherry contact produced dark fruit, dried fig and bitter cocoa, overlaid with the woody spice and leather typical of the distillery. At 60.2% the release carries real presence and density, a characteristic Karuizawa expression from the years shortly before the distillery fell silent.
