Description
Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture is synonymous with sherry maturation, but a small number of casks took a different path. This single cask from the 1995 vintage was matured in Ex-Bourbon wood and finished or transferred into a Japanese wine cask before being bottled in 2008 at a high cask strength of 63% for the European market.
The combination of Ex-Bourbon and Japanese wine cask is unusual in the Karuizawa range and gives this expression a distinct profile: bright red and black fruit from the wine wood sits alongside the vanilla and light oak of the bourbon maturation, with the spirit's own Golden Promise malt character visible underneath. The Japanese wine cask adds a local specificity not present in Oloroso or standard bourbon releases, making this single cask a notable outlier in a distillery catalogue otherwise dominated by sherry.
