Description
Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture closed in 2000 and its remaining casks have been released at various ages and for various markets over the decades since. This single cask from the 1994 vintage has an unusual provenance for its wood: an ex-Glenlivet Oloroso sherry butt, meaning the cask previously held Glenlivet spirit before being seasoned with Oloroso and then filled with Karuizawa. It was aged 12 years and bottled in 2006 at cask strength of 61% for an event release.
At 12 years in this specific butt, the spirit shows the characteristic dark plum, leather and dried-fruit richness of Karuizawa sherry maturation in a compact, direct form. The ex-Glenlivet history adds a layer of wood complexity not present in a standard Oloroso butt. Event-only releases of this era were among the earliest market appearances for vintage Karuizawa single casks, giving this bottling an early-archive character.
