Kamil Barczentewicz, trained in France and Austria, is a leading name in Poland’s new wine wave. His Pinot Noir from Malopolska is farmed organically and made naturally, aged nine months in oak for a fresh, earthy red of cherry and red berries.
Description
Kamil Barczentewicz is a young winemaker working in Malopolska, in the Malopolski Przelom Wisly area of southern Poland, one of the regions now putting cool-climate Central European wine on the map. After training in France and Austria he returned home to farm organically and work with minimal intervention, which is reflected in this natural Pinot Noir. Poland's cool, continental climate is well suited to the variety, giving slow ripening and naturally high acidity, while the short growing season keeps alcohol moderate and the fruit on the red rather than black side of the spectrum. The wine is made without additions and aged nine months in oak barrels, which lend gentle structure and a light savoury spice while letting the fruit and terroir lead. The colour is bright, light ruby. The nose shows fresh cherry and red berries with an earthy, faintly herbal edge typical of natural Pinot. The palate is light to medium bodied, with crisp acidity, soft tannin and a clean, savoury finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees in a Burgundy glass. It pairs naturally with roast duck, poultry and mushroom dishes.
