Kaiza 5 King of Kings Blue Gin

Kaiza distil this one in South Africa around a traditional botanical base, then lean into spectacle: the striking blue hue is natural in origin, and when tonic is added it shifts to a soft violet, a colour trick that earns the bottle its place behind the bar. Underneath the showmanship sits a sensible build of juniper, coriander and angelica root, lifted by floral and fruity touches.

The nose opens with juniper, fresh citrus and a sprig of lavender over fine herbs. On the palate it stays soft and balanced, floral freshness carrying citrus peel and mild spice, before a clean, pleasantly dry and faintly floral finish. Pour it over plenty of ice with a neutral or floral tonic and a slice of grapefruit, and watch the colour turn.
